I have recently finished working on a biography of my father, the actor Harry H Corbett.
I spent six months researching his life and then the next 3 years writing the book.
From his birth in Rangoon, Burma, the book follows Harry as he grows up in a Manchester
slum, joins the Royal Marines and fights hand-to-hand in the jungles of the Far East
before jumping ship in Australia.
It charts his transition from being the front legs of the pantomime cow in provincial
weekly repertory theatre to being one of London’s hottest young actors with the innovative
Theatre Workshop Company while moonlighting as a Soho bouncer- running the gamut
of Shakespeare, B-movies and experimental television before becoming a household
name as Harold Steptoe in ‘Steptoe and Son’.
Everyone I meet asks me what Harry was like - this book is the long answer.
